Facet Names

Before we proceed to discuss a diamond's cut quality, it pays to familiarise yourself with the names of a diamond's facets.

A standard Brilliant Round diamond has 58 facets. Some brilliant rounds have 57 facets because it does not have a culet (face at the tip of the pavilion). This is normal.

All 58 facets plus the girdle are important. If the measurement of any facet deviates too much from the ideal range, the light return of the diamond will be negatively affected. We shall discuss each of these in greater detail when we talk about cut proportions later.

Come back to this page whenever you need a reminder on facet names.
